Former director, AOKI given priority in selecting sponsors Olympics corruption

Haruyuki Takahashi (78), a former director of the Organizing Committee of the Tokyo 2020 Games, was arrested on suspicion of accepting bribes in a corruption case involving the selection of sponsors for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. Interviews with people involved revealed that there was a suspicion that he had been introduced to the company and given a "job offer". Domestic sponsors were divided into three ranks, and in principle, the sponsors were selected from the top, but it seems that AOKIHD, which was about to enter the lowest rank, was informed by the former director of the company before the top ranked companies were decided. .

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office's Special Investigation Department believes that the former director was unofficially appointed as a sponsor by the company more than a year before the official contract, and is analyzing materials seized from the liquidator of the Organizing Committee, and it seems that they are investigating the selection situation in detail at that time. .

Domestic sponsors are divided into three ranks, in order of Gold Partner (Tier 1), Official Partner (Tier 2), and Official Supporter (Tier 3). The Organizing Committee, which was established in January 2014, outsourced work to a major advertising company, Dentsu, as an exclusive agency for collecting sponsors. Dentsu proceeded with contracts in order, starting with Tier 1, which has the largest sponsorship fee (support money).

According to people involved, in January 2017, the former director met former AOKIHD chairman Hironori Aoki (83), who was arrested on suspicion of bribery, and confirmed his intention to become a sponsor. The former director sounded out 750 million yen, which is half the standard amount of 1.5 billion yen for Tier 3 sponsorship, and the former chairman agreed. However, at that time, the selection of Tier 2 was mainly done.

After repeated meetings, the two agreed to pay 250 million yen out of the 750 million yen in advance by the summer of the same year to strengthen the sports organization recommended by the former director. In this process, while the former director informed the AOKIHD side of the offer, there is a suspicion that the organizing committee introduced the company with the difference of 500 million yen as a sponsorship. At this time, there were still quite a few Tier 2 companies that did not reach a contract. In October 2018, AOKIHD was officially awarded Tier 3 for 500 million yen.

Since around January 2017, the former director had received numerous requests from three AOKIHD executives, including the former chairman, who wanted to receive favorable treatment in the selection of sponsors and other matters. He was arrested for receiving a total of 51 million yen in bribes per month. The former board member has denied the charges against him even after his arrest.
