Government spent only 38 lakhs on Donald Trump's 36-hour visit to India, information revealed in RTI

  When Donald Trump came to India, he announced a defense deal worth three billion dollars.  He did domestic security, intellectual property law, reactor agreement under civil nuclear deal, defense deal and limited trade deal.  Before Trump, former US President Barack Obama had visited India twice.  Obama visited India for the first time in 2010, after that in 2015 he visited India once again.


Former US President Donald Trump visited India in 2020.  India had made such grand preparations to welcome him that the echo of Namaste Trump was heard all over the world, but do you know how much the central government had spent on this 36-hour visit of Trump.  The Ministry of External Affairs told the Central Information Commission that the central government had spent about Rs 38 lakh on Trump's visit.


In fact, through an RTI, an attempt was made to know from the Ministry of External Affairs that during the visit of Trump in 2020, how much the Indian government had spent on his food, security, stay, flight and transportation etc.


Visited Ahmedabad, Agra, New Delhi


According to the information given by the Ministry of External Affairs, on his first visit to India, Trump along with wife Melania, daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner and several top officials visited Ahmedabad, Agra and New Delhi on February 24-25.


 Trump spent three hours in Ahmedabad on February 24.  During this, he participated in a 22 km long road show.  After this, paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at the Sabarmati Ashram and addressed a huge gathering "Namaste Trump" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the newly built Motera Cricket Stadium.


After this Trump went to see the Taj Mahal on the same day.  He visited New Delhi on 25 February, where he held bilateral talks with Modi.


RTI was filed on 24 October 2020


 According to the information, the applicant had filed RTI on 24 October 2020 but he did not get any reply from the government.  Thereafter the applicant filed the first appeal and then later approached the Commission, the highest appellate authority in RTI matters.


 At the same time, the External Affairs Minister said that due to the outbreak of Kovid, there was a delay in replying to the RTI.  After this, on August 4 this year, the Ministry of External Affairs informed the Commission about RTI.


 The External Affairs Minister also pointed out that it is customary to host the Heads of State on state visits or the Heads of Governments of other countries when they arrive in the country.  According to the prescribed norms, expenditure is made on their travels.
