Nagoya highway bus fire accident, 2 confirmed dead, 7 injured

 


Around 10:15 am on the 22nd, there was a call to 110 on the outbound line of the Komaki Line of the Nagoya Expressway in Niinuma-cho, Kita Ward, Nagoya City, saying, "I can see black smoke and fire."  According to the Aichi Prefectural Police Highway Squadron and others, an accident involving multiple vehicles occurred.  A large bus overturned and burst into flames.  The fire was extinguished, but two people were confirmed dead after suffering cardiopulmonary arrest.  The two are believed to have been in a large bus.


According to Aoi Kotsu, a large bus operator based in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture, the bus had left Sakae, Nagoya, and was headed for prefectural Nagoya Airport.


A 21-year-old man who passed by the scene immediately after the accident said, "It was hot (the bus was on fire). About 10 people evacuated and were sitting outside the car."


 The site is near the Toyoyama Minami Interchange (IC) on the Nagoya Expressway Komaki Line.  Due to the accident, the Kusunoki Junction (JCT)-Komaki Kita IC up and down lines were closed to traffic.  (Japanese original by Shunsuke Yamashita and Kenichiro Fuji, City News Department)
