DEX was conceptualized as a research testbed for the purpose of promoting new production and service concepts based on intelligent technology to achieve advanced digitization and automation.
Schaeffler is planning a research pilot using DEX in its own factories to optimize production operations

Schaeffler won the "Red Dot Award Best of the Best" for its autonomous robot Dual EXtendable (DEX).

Schaeffler, a global supplier in the automotive and industrial machinery sectors, recently won the "Red Dot Award Best of the Year" in the design concept category of the Red Dot Design Award for its autonomous mobile robot (AMR) project Dual EXtendable (DEX). Received "The Best" award.

DEX was conceived to create a new concept of autonomous mobile robot (AMR) platform dexterity and intelligence and collaboration with workers on the production floor.  Featuring bi-directional leg extension, wireless LAN and middleware integration, accurate self-localization with 2D/3D SLAM, and voice and gesture recognition capabilities, DEX enables productivity in industrial settings across a wide range of tasks. It serves as a research testbed that endows functionality with smart social behavior, with the aim of supporting and enhancing

Commenting on the award, Han Boon Siu, Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Schaeffler Asia Pacific and Director of the Schaeffler Advanced Research Hub, said:  "DEX's winning of the highly prestigious Red Dot Best of the Best Award is a testament to our ability to drive new possibilities in 'mobility' and 'motion' with our customers and in production. It's a testament to our tireless passion and commitment to developing solutions."

This research project is part of the Schaeffler Advanced Research Hub (SHARE) programme.  The SHARE program consists of a global research network with the world's leading universities and is based on the concept of corporate facilities on university campuses.  This enables, among other things, close interaction and close collaboration with Schaeffler employees, scientists and academics through applied research to advance the state of the art and translate research findings into product development activities.

DEX was designed in collaboration with Orcadesign Consultants Pte. Ltd., who also worked closely with the technical team at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to visualize the above concepts and the vision of DEX, while We leveraged their knowledge and expertise in defining the user experience, including shapes and touchpoints.

Mr Han said:  “Schaeffler sees this collaboration as the key to strategically developing components and technologies to meet the demands of future-oriented trends in the automotive and industrial machinery sectors. We look forward to building a bridge between system development expertise and the technical capabilities of academic research institutions and industry experts, strengthening Schaeffler's technical and organizational strengths."

In order to professionally evaluate a wide range of designs, the Red Dot Design Award is divided into three categories: "Red Dot Award Product Design", "Red Dot Award Communication Design", and "Red Dot Award Design Concept". divided.  The Red Dot Award is one of the world's largest design competitions, organized by the Nordrhein-Westphalia Design Center in Essen, Germany.
